Chris Young strains right hamstring rounding first, will go on DL

BOSTON -- Red Sox left fielder Chris Young left Thursday's 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox with a strained right hamstring.

Young will head to the disabled list with no obvious replacement in the immediate term. He is the Red Sox's third starting left fielder to get hurt this season.

Young was injured in the second inning after leading off with a single off the top of the Green Monster. He aggressively rounded first, stopped, reached for his right leg above the knee, limped back to the base and crumpled to the ground.

Two Red Sox staff members helped him off the field. Young put no weight on his right leg. Ryan LaMarre pinch ran for Young and replaced him in left field.

"From what you saw on the field, we're hopeful it's not as severe. He felt a little popping sensation when he was rounding first base," manager John Farrell said. "This is significant enough that we can make the DL call right now."

Among the Red Sox's other left fielder injuries, Brock Holt (concussion) and Blake Swihart (ankle sprain) are working their way back.

Holt is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and is slated to play seven innings in the infield Thursday and nine innings in the outfield Friday. The Red Sox don't intend on rushing him back.

"We wouldn't do anything before he's ready," Farrell said. "He's not ready yet."

Swihart moved from a walking boot to a brace Thursday and went through range-of-motion tests on his badly sprained left ankle. Farrell indicated that Swihart was progressing well but is still far from returning.

That leaves the team with little to no attractive options as it embarks on a six-game trip to Texas and Tampa Bay. Rusney Castillo, who entered spring training as the presumptive starting left fielder, was taken off the 40-man roster this week. Bryce Brentz, a former first-round draft pick, has been swinging the bat well of late for the PawSox. And 27-year-old Chris Marrero, cousin of infielder Deven Marrero, has had decent numbers for the PawSox this year.

Travis Shaw, a corner infielder who played in left after pinch hitting for LaMarre, could feasibly fill in for a couple of days until Holt is ready. Shaw has been battling a right shin contusion.

"I think that was an emergency situation-type thing, but I'm open to whatever they want," Shaw said.

Shaw held it down Thursday, despite only three major league innings at the position and not practicing there since -- according to him -- the second week of spring training.

He caught the only ball hit his way, a J.B. Shuck fly ball with the bases loaded in the eighth. Brett Lawrie held up at third as Shaw fired home.

"He didn't run," Shaw said. "Apparently the scouting report is out: Don't run."
