Nationals acquire minor league RHP Jimmy Cordero from Phillies

The Washington Nationals acquired right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cordero from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for a player to be named later, the teams announced Wednesday.

Over his five-year minor league career, Cordero, 25, is 10-12 with a 3.80 ERA in 155 appearances, five of which were starts. He has 166 strikeouts in 170 1/3 innings -- and his fastball has reached over 100 mph on occasion.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Cordero originally signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as a free agent in 2011. In 2015, Cordero was traded to the Phillies as part of the deal that sent outfielder Ben Revere to Toronto.

Cordero was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Nov. 18.

With the addition of Cordero, the Nationals now have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
