Washington Nationals star right-hander Stephen Strasburg left Friday night's 15-3 win in Baltimore after throwing just 16 pitches because of a lingering nerve issue in his right hand, manager Dave Martinez said. Strasburg will receive a CT scan on Saturday, Martinez said, adding that the pitcher was feeling numbness in his thumb and that the sensation originated in the wrist. The manager said he hopes Strasburg can bounce back but acknowledged, "I think the best thing is to shut him down" until the cause of the pain can be determined. "I didn't like what I saw," Martinez said. "I told him then and there, 'Hey, I don't want you to continue right now.' I talked to him after he came out, and I appreciated him trying to gut it out. But I don't want this to become a bigger issue if something else goes wrong." Strasburg was shaking his right hand on the mound before walking to the dugout. Martinez said the team will examine the issue closely over the next few days. "We're gonna really try to take care of him and get him back completely healthy," Martinez said. Strasburg declined through a team spokesman to speak with reporters after the game. After putting off the beginning of his season to address his ailing hand, Strasburg was making his second start of the year. His first outing came against the Orioles in a game that was suspended Sunday at Nationals Park and completed Friday at Camden Yards with Baltimore winning 6-2. In Strasburg's abbreviated second start, he gave up a solo homer to Anthony Santander and got two outs before departing. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
