Wizards extend Warriors' futility

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Facing one of the few teams whose struggles were worse than their own, the Washington Wizards weren't lacking for motivation.

Mitch Richmond scored 19 points as Washington beat Golden State 99-87 Monday night, extending the Warriors' losing streak to six and keeping them winless under new coach Garry St. Jean.

"All we have to do is look at the standings (and see) we're still in last place," Richmond said. "We can't be overconfident with no one."

Rod Strickland had 15 points and 10 assists and Juwan Howard added 13 points for the Wizards, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the first time in six games against a Pacific Division opponent.

Later this week, Washington has a home-and-home series against Chicago, the last-place team in the Central Division. The Bulls have the fewest wins in the NBA.

That could give the Wizards a three-game winning streak -- which would match Washington's season high -- a distinct possibility, though Wizards coach Gar Heard quickly deflected such talk.

"You guys keep saying we should win. ... I don't think this team will take anyone lightly," Heard said.

Golden State, which has dropped three straight since St. Jean replaced the fired P.J. Carlesimo on Dec. 27, got 21 points from Antawn Jamison. Golden State has lost four consecutive road games.

"It is going to take time. Everything is totally new," St. Jean said. "We haven't had that much time. You learn a lot when you are out on the floor."

Jason Caffey had 14 points for the Warriors.

Strickland's jumper started a 9-0 run for Washington midway through the first period, producing a 20-13 advantage. But Jamison and Donyell Marshall each had four points in an ensuing 12-2 spree as Golden State regained the lead 25-22.

Jamison had 17 first-half points, but the Warriors converted only one shot from the field in the opening six minutes of the second period.

"In the first half, I got a lot of touches," Jamison said. "In the second half, things didn't go my way. It was hard for me to get touches around the rim."

The Wizards couldn't take advantage of the cold spell until Tracy Murray came off the bench with 9:56 left in the half.

Murray scored 11 points in five minutes, hitting three of four 3-pointers, including a shot from deep in the right corner as the first half expired to give the Wizards a 56-51 lead.

Washington led by as many as 13 in the third quarter when Strickland hit two free throws with 1:06 left. Jamison banked in a shot with 2:51 remaining, cutting the lead to 91-87, but the Wizards got the next four points.

Notes
St. Jean prowled the sidelines, alternating expletive-laced commentary with good-natured ribbing of Wizards players. ... Richmond has reached double figures in scoring in 16 consecutive games. ... Reserve forward Tony Farmer is the only Warriors player to appear in all 30 games. ... The Warriors were outrebounded 42-35, the sixth time in seven games that's happened.
