Malone hits 17 third-quarter points

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- For most of the game, the Golden State Warriors managed to contain Karl Malone. It didn't matter because in the third quarter, there was no stopping him.

Malone scored 17 of his 29 points in the third period, helping the Utah Jazz break away for a 94-82 victory over the Warriors on Saturday night.

It was Utah's 14th straight win over the slumping Warriors, losers of nine straight including two to the Jazz this week.

"He's had stretches like that, where things might not go especially well, but he gets on a roll and then it's tough to keep the ball away from him," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "When he's making shots out there on the floor, that opens up things huge for him."

John Stockton scored eight points to give him 16,000 for his career. He became the 65th player in NBA history to reach the milestone.

Bryon Russell added 17 points and Howard Eisley had 12 for the Jazz, who won on the road for just the third time in seven games.

Chris Mills scored a season-high 24 points for the Warriors. Antawn Jamison added 17 points and Mookie Blaylock 14 for Golden State, which hasn't beaten the Jazz in more than three years.

Malone fought through double teams and tense, bruising matchups with Jason Caffey, Larry Farmer and Terry Cummings, who blew his cool midway through the fourth quarter and was ejected after drawing a pair of technical fouls.

"We kept our composure and did the things we needed to do," said Malone, who did draw a technical in the late going with the game in hand. "We executed really well in the third quarter and opened a lead. Any time you had a tough game like you did last night, and to be able to bounce back on a team waiting here in their own building, no matter who it is, it's a big win for us."

Rebounding from a 100-75 loss to Indiana on Friday, the Jazz pulled away in the third quarter behind Malone, who made six of his seven shots from the floor and all five free throws in the period.

His 17 points were one fewer than Golden State scored as a team in the third quarter.

Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said Malone wore down the Warriors defensively.

"We didn't approach him differently in the second compared to the first half," he said. "Our double team started getting there late and a couple of their players stepped up. He did a better job of getting the ball down low in the second half. He wasn't hitting his jumper like he usually does against us, so he started getting the ball low and putting it in the basket."

With the Warriors down 80-67 with 8:47 left, they lost Cummings to an automatic ejection. He drew two technical fouls for his aggressive protests after he was called for fouling Malone as the two shoved each other trying to gain position beneath the basket.

Eisley then made both technical free throws and the Warriors made little headway the rest of the way.

Golden State managed to get within 88-80 on Jamison's 6-foot runner but he then missed both free throws around a pair of layups by Stockton as the Jazz secured the win.

Up 45-43 at halftime, the Jazz moved in front 58-51 on Malone's 15-foot jumper midway through the third quarter.

Golden State scored the next six points, pulling to within a point on Jamison's 12-foot jumper but the Jazz then put together an 11-2 run, opening their biggest lead to that point 69-59 as Malone connected on a turnaround jumper.
