All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard, introduced by the Toronto Raptors on Monday, said he wants to concentrate on this season, not his future.
"I want to play here," Leonard said. "I came in with an open mind. I want to do great things ... focus on this year. If you're looking toward the future, you're going to trip over the present."
Asked about his long-term goals, Leonard, who described himself as a "fun guy," said he plans to "play a long, healthy career; be happy wherever I land."
Leonard, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, was traded to the Raptors on July 18 by the San Antonio Spurs. The Raptors sent guard DeMar DeRozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a protected first-round pick in 2019 to San Antonio for Leonard and veteran Danny Green.
Leonard will be a free agent after this season. Leonard is primarily interested in signing with the Lakers or Clippers in July, league sources tell ESPN.
Leonard played only nine games for the Spurs last season because of a quad injury. His relationship with the team was strained, and late in the season he made it known that he wanted to to leave the only team for which he had played.
Asked what went wrong last season, Leonard said, "I have no regrets. But I want to focus on this team, this journey that we have in front of us today, and just stay in the present time, and not look back."
New Raptors coach Nick Nurse said he had no conversations with the Spurs about what went wrong last season. Nurse said all that mattered to him was that Leonard was "serious about winning."
Leonard broke out a rare smile as he was introduced. Asked to tell a little bit about himself, he said, "I'm a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean, there's just more questions you'll have to ask me. I can't give you a spiel about me."
Asked his reaction to coming to Toronto, Leonard said, "Excited. I'm coming to a great city that loves basketball."
