Sources: Bucks extend GM Horst on 3-year deal

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst -- an NBA Executive of the Year candidate -- has signed a three-year contract extension, league sources told ESPN.

The Bucks announced the deal Friday, terming it "a multiyear extension."

Horst is considered one of the front-runners for NBA Executive of the Year, a short list that includes Denver's Tim Connelly, the Clippers' Lawrence Frank and Toronto's Masai Ujiri.

"I'm thankful to our ownership group for their continued trust and confidence in me,'' Horst said. "Wes [Edens], Marc [Lasry] and Jamie [Dinan] have been resolute in their commitment to building a championship-caliber team, providing the necessary tools and resources, and I look forward to continuing to execute their vision.''

Milwaukee ownership approached Horst near the end of the Bucks' season about beginning talks on a new deal, and those conversations culminated in an agreement in recent days, league sources said. Horst has evolved into a popular figure and strong leader in a Bucks organization that had struggled through fractures in recent years.

"Jon's strong leadership and savvy decision-making ability have been instrumental as we continue to build the Bucks into a championship-caliber organization,'' the Bucks' ownership group said in a release.

Horst has made a dramatic impact in his two years as GM, surrounding All-NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo and All-Star Khris Middleton with a strong supporting cast and an elite coach, Mike Budenholzer. Milwaukee had the NBA's best regular-season record and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals.

"I want to give a big thank-you to our terrific players for their outstanding efforts,'' Horst said. "Giannis, Khris [Middleton], Brook [Lopez], Malcolm [Brogdon] and Eric [Bledsoe] all had incredible seasons and our 'Bench Mob' was fantastic all season long. All of our players brought so much excitement to the court and I thank each of them for contributing to our success and embracing our great city and fans.''

The Bucks are 104-60 (.634) in his two-year tenure.
