Illawarra Hawks sign Boomers star Duop Reath for 2021/22 NBL season

Olympics-bound centre Duop Reath will play in the NBL next season for the Illawarra Hawks under national coach Brian Goorjian.

The 25-year-old South Sudanese-born Reath is the mystery man of the Boomers squad vying for gold in Tokyo, selected after impressing for Serbian EuroLeague outfit KK Crvena Zvezda.

He has quickly turned heads with impressive form in pre-Olympic exhibition games though, the 211cm talent showing an ability to hit three-point shots and muscle his way to the rim.

Reath moved to Brisbane as a nine-year-old then headed to Perth before embarking on a US college career which included a stint with LSU - hat began the year Ben Simmons departed for the NBA.

Undrafted in the 2018 NBA draft, Reath played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Summer League before heading to Europe.

He'll join a growing list of local talent heading home though, Boomers teammate Jock Landale starring for Melbourne United this season while Australia's veteran NBA point guard Matthew Dellavedova is set to play on home soil next year.

"Duop is a talent, there's no doubting that," Goorjian said.

"He's been plying his trade overseas and away from the spotlight a bit, but his skill set, basketball IQ and flexibility has been on show for Australia to see during this Olympic preparation and I couldn't be happier to have him as part of our roster for the next season of the NBL."
