STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Every time Arizona State got close, Stanford's Casey Jacobsen hit a rally-killing 3-pointer. By the time Jacobsen was done, he had 24 points and the No. 1 Cardinal were still undefeated.

Jacobsen hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half, including a four-point play midway through the period, as Stanford defeated the Sun Devils 86-67 Thursday night in the Pac-10 conference opener for both schools.

Mark Madsen added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Jarron Collins had 14 points for Stanford (12-0), playing its first conference game as the nation's top team. The Cardinal had played a series of overmatched opponents since moving up to No. 1 in mid-December.

"This was my first conference game. If every game is like this, they're going to be fun," said Jacobsen, a freshman. "It seemed like every possession was a life or death situation."

Stanford faces Arizona (No. 4 ESPN/USA Today, No. 5 AP) on Saturday in an early season battle of the teams expected to vie for the Pac-10 title. Arizona (12-2) won 65-61 at California on Thursday night.

Eddie House had 24 points and Chad Prewitt added a career-high 18 for Arizona State (8-4), which managed just 34.9 percent shooting against the nation's top defensive team. Stanford has held opponents to an average of 31 percent shooting this season.

House had been averaging 35 points in the previous four games before Thursday night.

"We knew he was going to score 20 points. Even if Michael Jordan were guarding him, he would have scored 20 points," said Jacobsen, who was matched up with House for most of the game. "Our plan was to limit his shot selection and hold him to under 30 points."

Leading by seven at halftime, Stanford extended its lead to 46-35 as Madsen and Ryan Mendez scored all of the Cardinal's points in the opening 6:19 of the second half. Each had four points during that span.

House then went on a spree, scoring seven quick points to pull ASU within 50-44, but Jacobsen hit a 3-pointer and followed 33 seconds later with another 3-pointer on which he was fouled and made the free throw.

Trailing by 15 points, the Sun Devils had scored eight straight points to pull within 59-52 when Jacobsen struck again, hitting a 3 from in front of the Stanford bench. David Moseley added another 3-pointer, and ASU didn't threaten again.

ASU coach Rob Evans said there are not many surprises when playing Stanford, but the Cardinal had too much depth for his Sun Devils.

"Stanford is pretty plain vanilla. They go high and low. But (Jacobsen) got loose and when he gets on a streak he's tough to stop," Evans said. "Essentially they wore us down late in the ballgame and that's why they're No. 1, their depth."

ASU's pressure defense rattled Stanford at times in the opening half, and Cardinal coach Mike Montgomery got called for a technical foul just 3:09 into the game. The Sun Devils led for most of the half, but a 15-6 run by Stanford to close the half gave it a 38-31 halftime lead.

Mendez and Jacobsen each hit 3-pointers in the first half and scored nine points to lead Stanford. House had 14 points for ASU, but missed all three of his 3-pointers in the half. The Sun Devils went 0-for-7 on 3-pointers in the first half.

"That's exactly what we expected from the conference, a tough physical game," Montgomery said. "Casey did a really nice job coming off the bench and scoring. We needed that lift."
