SEATTLE (AP) -- Deon Luton scored 14 of Washington's final 20 points and the Huskies closed the game with a 7-2 run to upset UCLA 63-62 Thursday night in the Pac-10 opener Thursday night. "We played tough. Everybody played hard, and our big guys really worked hard down the stretch," said Luton, who finished with 26 points, including a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left that gave the Huskies (6-7) a 61-60 lead and two free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
"I don't know whether his foot was on the line or not," Bruins coach Steve Lavin said. "The official seemed to have a pretty good view of it." Last week, the Bruins (8-3) escaped with a 68-66 home victory over Pepperdine after Craig Lewis' putback at the buzzer, which looked in time on replays, was waved off by a referee. Luton was 10-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Will Perkins had 10 rebounds and Senque Carey had 11 assists for the Huskies, who have won three of the last four meetings with UCLA. "Luton had a big-time night which was one of our concerns," Lavin said. "He's a senior, and he played like it tonight. He's going to have to play like that to carry them." Kapono led the Bruins with 19 points, while Jerome Moiso added 13. Dan Gadzuric pulled down 13 rebounds for UCLA. After Washington's 9-2 run over the first four minutes of the second half gave it a 36-33 lead, nobody led by more than three points until Gadzuric's layup put UCLA ahead 60-56 with 1:43 left. Washington coach Bob Bender was proud of his team's effort which snapped a two-game losing streak. "Before I said anything to the team, I wrote a very simple thing on the board. `Winning is so much better than losing,"' Bender said. "At times it didn't look like we were going to get rewarded for the effort." The Bruins opened the game with a 9-0 run as the Huskies missed their first seven shots. Washington ended the drought when Chris Walcott came off the bench and immediately connected on a three-point play with 16:11 left in the first half. Walcott did not start, and was not expected to play because of a sprained left knee. Washington tied the game at 11 after holding UCLA without a field goal for five minutes. The Huskies took their first lead, 20-18, on Marlon Shelton's layup with 5:10 remaining in the half. The Bruins regained the lead on consecutive 3-pointers by Kapono and led 31-27 at halftime.
