Jayhawks hold off late K-State rally

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Eric Chenowith got the key points and the crucial rebounds in the final minutes as No. 8 Kansas blew a big lead and then held on to beat Kansas State 87-79 Wednesday night for the Jayhawks' 17th straight victory over their rivals.

Kansas State (8-5, 1-1 Big 12) used two big runs to nearly erase an 18-point halftime deficit and stun the sellout crowd when Josh Kimm's bucket made it 79-78 with 1:41 left.

Then Chenowith, Kansas' 7-foot-1 junior center who's been fighting a slump, completed a three-point play. He finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

With 1:24 to go. Donnie Wallace missed a free throw for Kansas State and Chenowith got the rebound and a few seconds later Nick Bradford's free throw made put Kansas (13-2, 2-0) ahead 83-78.

Kelvin Howell trimmed the lead with a follow with 44 seconds left before Jeff Boschee's two free throws put the game out of reach with 33 seconds to go.

Another easy Kansas victory seemed assured when the Jayhawks seized a 54-36 halftime lead. But the game changed immediately in the second half as the Jayhawks missed 10 of their first 13 shots and Kelvin Howell got eight of Kansas State's points in a 16-10 run.

Kimm came off the bench and hit a 3-pointer that got the lead to nine, 66-57. With 7:20 left, Cortez Groves connected on a 12-footer that sliced the lead to seven points.

Kansas State coach Tom Asbury fell to 0-18 lifetime against Kansas' Roy Williams, including three losses while he was at Pepperdine.

Williams raised his record against Kansas State to 26-4.

The Wildcats, who have not beaten Kansas since Jan. 17, 1994, trailed by 18 when Jeff Boschee hit a 3-pointer just before halftime.

The Wildcats, plagued all season by sloppy ball-handling, committed 14 turnovers in the first half as Kansas took control of the game.

Galen Morrison, who had scored 45 points in Kansas State's two previous games, scored 15 points and was 3-for-5 in 3-pointers. But the junior college transfer, playing with a brace on his right knee, went down writing in pain after hitting a layup that made it 79-72 and was helped off the court with 4:03 left.

Luke Axtell had 14 points and Nick Collision 13 for Kansas.

Groves scored 20 for Kansas State. Howell had 16 and Galen Morrison 15.
