OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Tony Heard scored 19 points and Greg
Harrington added 15 as Tulsa (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) held off Creighton 75-67 Wednesday night.
Brandon Kurtz added 12 and David Shelton had 10 for the Golden
Hurricane (15-1), who recovered after Creighton's early charge in
the second half to win its eighth straight game.
Tulsa has won 12 of the last 13 matchups with its former
Missouri Valley Conference opponent. Wednesday night was the first
meeting between the schools since the Golden Hurricane left the MVC
for the Western Athletic Conference after the 1995-96 season.
Matt West, Nerijus Karlikanovas and Terrell Taylor each scored
11 for the Bluejays, who have lost five of their past six. Kyle
Corver scored 10 for Creighton (10-5).
Each team was 22-for-45 from the field, but Tulsa was able to
win on 3-pointers and free throws. The Hurricane were 11-for-20
from 3-point range and 20-for-24 from the line.
The Jays were 8-for-18 on 3s and 15-for-23 on free throws,
including 11-for-19 in the second half.
Creighton, which trailed 41-36 at halftime, tied it at 42 on a
layup by Walker, then took a 45-42 lead on Korver's 3-pointer as
the Jays took advantage of sluggish second-half start by Tulsa with
a 9-1 run. Creighton scored 16 of the first 20 points of the half.
The Hurricane, which shot 58 percent in the first half, opened
the second without a field goal in the first 4:30.
But Creighton eventually went cold and Tulsa regrouped with a
16-1 run, started by Kurtz's three-point play, as the Jays didn't
make a field goal for nearly eight minutes.
Tulsa led 41-36 at halftime after going 14-for-24, including
7-of-10 from 3-point range. Heard was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc
and Marcus Hill was 2-for-4.
The Hurricane used an 8-0 run midway through the half to take a
21-13 lead, but Creighton, which missed three straight shots and
turned the ball over once during Tulsa's run, kept it close by
shooting 54 percent in the half.
