DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Chris Carrawell and Shane Battier have been
at Duke long enough to know the young Blue Devils aren't playing
like former teams.
And after 19 years, coach Mike Krzyzewski knows it too.
"You could tell we weren't together out there. Duke teams in
the past ... play hard every play. We aren't doing that right
now," said Carrawell, a senior who led Duke with 20 points in a
99-52 win over Columbia on Tuesday night.
Duke (2-2) lost to Stanford and Connecticut before beating Army
100-42 Sunday in its home opener.
And even though Columbia (0-2) was never in the game, the Lions scored 10 points off 17 turnovers and had several wide-open shots
under the basket. The Blue Devils outrebounded Columbia by "only"
36-25.
Freshmen Carlos Boozer and Mike Dunleavy each scored 16 points while freshman Jason Williams scored 12 points and junior Nates
James added 11 apiece for Duke.
"We didn't put together the effort we wanted to," said
Battier, a junior who scored 11 points. "It's difficult but it's
what makes Duke Duke. If you go out and expect to play your best
every time out you're going to make the habit of being precise."
Leading 19-11, Duke went on a 19-0 run as Dunleavy made two
3-pointers.
After taking a 55-19 lead at halftime, Duke went ahead 66-23
with 16:48 left following Nate James' one-handed dunk and Boozer's
two-handed slam and follow-up basket.
Carrawell made two 3-pointers to give Duke a 76-33 lead with
13:22 left.
Reserve Ryan Caldbeck had a chance for the second game in a row to get Duke's total up to 100, but he missed one of two free throws
with 11 seconds remaining.
Krzyzewski said in other years the older Blue Devils have been
able to mentor the young players and teach them the Duke way. But
that's hard with seven freshmen.
"What's going to take awhile is the fact that we don't have as
many upperclassmen teaching younger kids," he said. "And that
has been a big part of our system here at Duke. Not that Shane and
Chris aren't trying."
The Blue Devils were able to carry on one tradition. The win was
Duke's 38th straight at home and tied an Atlantic Coast Conference
record held by North Carolina State, whose streak lasted from
1971-74 in Reynolds Coliseum. The Blue Devils' last loss at home
was to Wake Forest on Jan. 11, 1997.
