STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Brian Montonati is taking full
advantage of his expanded role for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
The senior forward, a key backup player the last two seasons,
had 22 points and 11 rebounds as Oklahoma State (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) beat
Texas-San Antonio 87-66 on Saturday night.
"I just feel more relaxed this year. I know my role better,"
said Montonati, who was 10-of-15 from the field. "The coaches have
confidence in me. I just tried to play as hard as I could."
Desmond Mason and Glendon Alexander each added 18 points for the
Cowboys, who made nine 3-pointers after going 0-for-7 from long
range in their last game.
"Glendon played well tonight, on both ends of the floor. He
worked hard on his shooting the last three days and it showed
tonight," Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton said.
Freshman Jon Havens and Lloyd Williams each scored 13 points for
Texas-Antonio, which shot 38 percent from the field.
"This is Jon's hometown. Jon was a ball boy here when I was an
assistant coach at Oklahoma State about 10 or 12 years ago. Jon has
always been a solid player," Roadrunners coach Tim Carter said.
Oklahoma State (6-0) used a series of second-half surges to beat
the Roadrunners (3-3).
Mason and Montonati each scored four points during an 8-0 that
gave the Cowboys a 45-25 lead early in the second half. Oklahoma
State later went on a 10-3 run to make it 53-38.
The Cowboys put the game away with a 9-0 run in the final five
minutes, turning a 74-55 lead into an 83-55 advantage.
"We've always competed. Tonight, I thought we just competed
until we got tired," Carter said. "We just our early but I tell
you one thing, this shows why they're a top 20 ball club."
