MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee coach Jerry Green is getting used
to the Volunteers' first-half struggles.
"The 15 turnovers and 30 points were typical of the way we've
played the past couple of games," Green said after the Vols (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) rallied to beat Memphis 74-69 on Saturday night.
Tennessee (9-0), which trailed 37-30 at the half, used a 15-5
run midway through the second half to overcome a 42-33 deficit.
Starters Tony Harris and Isiah Victor were on the bench during
the run because of foul trouble.
"When we made the run, we had four freshman and a sophomore in
the game, and I was really pleased that they showed some character
and took some good shots," Green said. "A lot of people stepped
up for us in different roles than we are accustomed to."
Memphis coach Johnny Jones couldn't fault his team's effort.
"I thought they worked as hard as they could possibly work on
both ends of the floor," Jones said. "They carried out the things
that we asked them to do. ... We talked about the opportunity to
give everything you've got on the floor every minute that you are
out there."
Memphis stayed with the Volunteers until the final three minutes
when Harris carried Tennessee with free-throw shooting. Harris
scored eight of his 14 points in the final 2:46.
Harris, who played only 23 minutes because of foul trouble, was
8-for-8 from the line to keep Tennessee undefeated.
Memphis, which led by 15 in the first half after a 16-1 Tigers
run, lost its fourth straight in the game marred by a first-half
scuffle that resulted in four ejections.
James Harris of Memphis and C.J. Black of Tennessee were ejected
for fighting under the Memphis basket, and Memphis' Kelly Wise and
Paris London were tossed out for leaving the bench during the
fight.
Five Tennessee players, led by Harris, finished in double
figures. Yarbrough and Ron Slay finished with 13 each, and Terrence
Woods and Victor had 11 apiece.
Marcus Moody led Memphis with 17, Keiron Shine added 16, and
Shamel Jones scored 11.
Tennessee took its first lead since early in the game when Jon
Higgins hit a 15-footer with 8:35 left.
The lead changed hands 13 times over the next six minutes until
Harris hit a pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining to give the
Volunteers a 66-65 edge.
