COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Thanks in part to the quarterback of the football team and a reserve freshman guard, Maryland (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 14 AP) completed the decade without losing to a non-league opponent at Cole Field House.

The Terrapins extended their home non-conference winning streak to 71 games Thursday night, overcoming another sluggish start in defeating Maryland-Baltimore County 82-52.

Terence Morris scored 17 points and Danny Miller had a career-high 16 for Maryland (10-2), but coach Gary Williams credited his reserves for lifting the team out of an early funk.

Maryland missed nine of its first 11 shots and scored only four points over the first six minutes. It was 11-8 before the Terrapins pulled away with a 15-2 run that included two 3-pointers by backup guard Drew Nicholas and a good deal of hustle by freshman Calvin McCall, who spent the fall as Maryland's starting quarterback.

"In the first half our bench really picked us up. They gave us energy while they were out there," Williams said. "That's good, because we came out lethargic again."

Maryland was coming off a lackluster 69-66 win over George Mason and earlier this season was forced into overtime at home by Winthrop.

"I think we had the intensity but we didn't finish it on offense. We missed a lot of easy shots early," Miller said. "The bench did a really good job. They got us motivated and fired up."

Lonny Baxter had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Terrapins, whose 71-game run is the longest of its kind in the nation. Maryland last lost at home against a non-league foe in December 1989.

Maryland never trailed in its season-high fourth straight victory. The Terrapins are 11-0 against UMBC and have won 26 consecutive games against in-state schools.

Justin Wilson scored 13 points for the Retrievers (4-5), who had as many turnovers (19) as points in the first half. UMBC went 20-for-69 (29 percent) from the field and missed 21 of 25 shots from 3-point range.

"We just couldn't get in sync at all," UMBC coach Tom Sullivan said. "A lot of it had to do with the 12-day layoff, but they're ranked 14th in the country for a reason. Maryland did a god job with its defensive pressure."

The Terrapins led 41-19 before opening the second half with a 16-1 run that made it 57-20 with 13 minutes left. UMBC scored the next 12 points before Morris ended the run with a three-point play.

Morris was 5-for-9 from the field, 7-for-9 at the foul line and also grabbed nine rebounds.

UMBC missed its first seven shots and had five turnovers, yet trailed only 4-0 before Issac Green hit a jumper in the lane with nearly four minutes elapsed. Neither team scored again until Baxter made two foul shots with 13:54 left in the half.

Minutes later, Nicholas and McCall fueled the 15-2 spree. McCall had two assists and made two foul shots to become the first Maryland football player to score for the basketball team since Lubo Zizakovic in 1992.

"The big thing is, when he went in he fit in," Williams said.
