Demon Deacons fall again in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) -- Villanova capped the Rainbow Classic with its best game of the season. For No. 19 Wake Forest, the tournament was one it would like to forget.

The Wildcats beat Wake Forest 70-57 Thursday night in the fifth-place game.

"I thought we played great," Villanova coach Steve Lappas said. "It was our best game from beginning to end this season. Our defense was great, but that was set up by the offense.

"I feel a lot better than I did two days ago. And this gets us ready for the (Big East) conference."

In their opener of the eight-team tournament, the Wildcats (6-3) were routed by Colorado 79-56. They beat Bradley by one in overtime on Wednesday.

Malik Allen, who scored 18 points and had seven rebounds, said the plan was to attack the Demon Deacons (9-3).

"We did that from the start," he said. "It's a tribute to our team. It's great to win against a ranked team."

For Wake Forest, the only ranked team in the tournament, it was a bitter loss, one that followed an opening-round one-point loss to Oregon and a double-overtime win over Ohio.

The Demon Deacons' inability to control Allen is what spelled their doom Thursday, according to Dave Odom.

"We just couldn't control Malik," he said. "Nothing seemed to work -- man-to-man, zone. We just didn't stop him defensively."

Wake Forest was 11-for-49 from behind the 3-point arc in the three games.

"We had a terrible shooting tournament," Odom said. "We have to get back to Winston-Salem and get down to work."

Brian Lynch broke out of a shooting slump by hitting two 3-pointers in a 14-2 run for the Wildcats (6-3), who led 36-34 at halftime.

Midway through the second half, freshman Gary Buchanan nailed two 3-pointers during a 16-5 run that gave Villanova its biggest lead, 68-50.

Buchanan finished with 13 points and Lynch had 11.

Robert O'Kelley and Darius Songaila each had 12 points for Wake Forest, but O'Kelley's points all came in the first half. He was 0-for-5 from the field in the second half and went 1-for-7 from the 3-point line in the game.

The Wildcats' first run gave them a 29-19 run, but O'Kelley had 11 points in a 15-7 run that brought the Demon Deacons within two points at the half.

Wake Forest entered the tournament averaging 75.9 points per game, while giving up 57.6.
