Waiting game tough on Cinderellas

By Greg Collins
ESPN.com

The week before Selection Sunday is a wild ride for would-be Cinderellas. Conference tournaments can either provide shattering losses or keep the dream alive, and for those poor teams that didn't wrap up an automatic berth, the wait for Selection Sunday can seem interminable.

Dayton doesn't have anything to worry about. The Flyers are in the dance no matter what happens in the Atlantic 10 tournament, and have earned promotion off the Watch by decree of the public.

The Flyers moved on to contender status by a 3:1 voting margin, the first time a team has been happy about being voted off the Watch. But that's not where the wrinkles in this week's Watch end. Because of last week's unorthodox supplemental poll, we're breaking more rules.

The rest of last week's poll was so tight at the bottom (out of 12,604 votes, just 78 separated fifth from eighth) that we decided to keep the No. 8 team on the Watch. So rejoice, Hofstra! And watch out Kent -- you were only five votes ahead of the Flying Dutchmen.

If you want to see the final results from last week's poll, you can find it in the user feedback from the Feb. 28 Cinderella Watch.

Bowling Green Falcons
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
22-7 (14-4 MAC) 46 Down Defeated Kent 71-61

We hope the Falcons are Tom Petty fans, because they'll really get to know how the waiting is the hardest part over the next week. By losing to Miami (Ohio) in overtime, Bowling Green failed to make it out of the Mid-American quarterfinals. Will a 35-foot Jason Grunkemeyer buzzer-beater keep the Falcons out of the dance?

Hofstra Flying Dutchmen
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
23-6 (16-2 Am. East) 59 Up Defeated Maine 80-72 and 67-64

After cruising through the America East quarters and semis, now the Flying Dutchmen have to wait until Saturday before playing Delaware in the conference final. Both teams are hot -- Hofstra has won six in a row (and 16 of 17), while the Fighting Blue Hens are riding an eight-game winning streak. This conference won't get a second bid, so expect to see both teams laying it all on the line.

Indiana State Sycamores
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
22-9 (14-4 MVC) 43 Down Defeated Indiana 63-60

Indiana State's seed advantage by winning the MVC regular-season title lasted until the semifinals. An upset loss to Creighton means the Sycamores are left wondering about their fate. They'll be pulling for Southwest Missouri State in the final, because if Creighton wins the automatic berth, SMS will likely get the at-large nod over Indiana State.

Kent Golden Flashes
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
21-7 (13-5 MAC) 27 Down Defeated Bowling Green 82-64

Apparently Kent didn't learn its lesson by losing to Ohio last week; it had to go out and do it again in the MAC tournament. The Golden Flashes had every opportunity to put the game away but didn't seem to have their heads in it -- they gave up a 32-8 run stretching over halftime, were assessed one technical foul for having six players on the floor and another for calling a timeout they didn't have. Ohio hit a driving shot with 1.7 seconds left to win it, even after Kent had successfully tied up the Bobcats' Shaun Stonerook as the clock wound down. The possession arrow? Pointing toward Ohio. Kent is hoping its streak of bad luck won't extend to Selection Sunday.

Pepperdine Waves
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
22-7 (12-2 WCC) 49 Up Defeated Gonzaga 80-69

The West Coast Conference got the final it wanted, pitting Pepperdine against Gonzaga. That was the only likely way for the WCC to get two teams in the NCAA Tournament. Pepperdine's power rating has gone down lately because it closed with a few weak teams, but 24 wins and a regular-season title should be enough to get the Waves an at-large spot should the Zags win the WCC tournament.

Southeast Missouri State Indians
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
24-6 (14-4 OVC) 67 Up Defeated Murray State 67-56

Southeast Missouri State is on easy street for a week after defeating rival Murray State in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament final. SEMO did it with defense, holding OVC player of the year Aubrey Reese to 1-for-18 shooting. Reese kept the Indians out of last year's NCAA Tournament by hitting a crazy shot at the buzzer in the OVC final.

Southwest Missouri State Bears
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
22-9 (13-5 MVC) 35 Up Defeated Indiana State 64-48

The Bears keep rolling. Winners of 10 in a row, SMS now holds almost all the cards in the MVC's hunt for at-large respect. Win the tourney and a spot likely opens up for Indiana State or Southern Illinois. Lose, and they'll get the at-large and leave the others at home.

Utah State Aggies
Record RPI Mo' Marquee victory
25-5 (16-0 Big West) 30 Up Defeated USC 52-50

The Aggies steamrolled through the Big West to a 16-0 record, which means they're riding a 16-game winning streak into postseason play. Utah State's side of the bracket is easy -- it should have 27 wins going into the final against either Long Beach State or New Mexico State. By then, not even a loss would derail the Aggies' at-large chances.
