Conference standings
MIAMI (Ticker) -- Coming off an impressive victory that resulted in the loss of an important player, 12th-ranked Miami takes on in-state foe Florida A&M in a tune-up for its showdown with Penn State. The Hurricanes (1-0) rolled past ninth-ranked Ohio State, 23-12, on Sunday in the Kickoff Classic, but the victory cost them second-string running back Najeh Davenport, who tore his ACL. That will leave just about all of the running to James Jackson, who gained 89 yards on 24 carries and burst 44 yards for a touchdown on the second play of Sunday's game. New quarterback Kenny Kelly threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, overcoming four turnovers. Santana Moss had three catches for 115 yards, including a 67-yarder that he turned into a back-breaking score with eight seconds left in the first half. "There was a lot of uncertainty heading into the game," Hurricanes coach Butch Davis said. "The really bright spots in the ballgame, I thought Kenny played with a lot of poise. The 60 minutes of football he played were more valuable in his development than the two years he played on the scout teams." Miami easily could get caught looking ahead, since Florida A&M is a Division I-AA team and, after a week off, No. 4 Penn State looms. Davis used little time to prepare for the Rattlers, coached by Billy Joe, in the offseason. "The only thing I know is that they are an explosive offense," Davis said. "They throw the ball a lot and play a lot of eight-man fronts. We played A&M a couple of years ago and they are clearly a more talented team (now)." The Hurricanes actually lost one of the four previous games in this series, 16-13 on October 6, 1979 at Florida State's Doak Campbell Stadium, but Miami has since outscored the Rattlers, 136-3. Florida A&M enters the season ranked ninth in the ESPN/USA Today I-AA top-25 poll after an 11-2 season.
