ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Now that Quincy Carter is a sophomore, he will be a marked man when he quarterbacks No. 13 Georgia against Utah State in the season opener for both schools. Carter, who also plays minor league baseball, was a sensation as a true freshman last season and has already has been elected as a permanent captain for the Bulldogs, joining senior guard Steve Herndon, senior linebacker Orantes Grant and junior defensive tackle Richard Seymour. Carter burst on the scene from the start last year and helped the Bulldogs complete a 9-3 season with a 35-33 victory over Virginia in the Peach Bowl. The Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year teamed with Champ Bailey, an All-American cornerback who doubled as the team's best receiver, and put up 2,706 passing yards and 503 on the ground. Carter was so good that three backups at his position transferred. "We're going to limit the amount of risks he takes," Georgia coach Jim Donnan said of Carter. "We're not going to call as many quarterback options or sweeps. It's a constant deal as far as adjusting to what other teams do and how they adjust to you. Hopefully we can create more turnovers with our defense and give him some breathing room and we can work more on our running game." Another member of the backfield, running back Patrick Pass, also is a minor league baseball player, while receiver Terrence Edwards plays for the Georgia basketball team. It should be another successful season for coach Jim Donnan, who has won 20 of his last 25 games and is 88-32 overall in three seasons with the Bulldogs and six with Marshall. Donnan's counterpart, Dave Arlslanian, is 56-55 overall in 11 seasons and is in his second campaign with the Aggies, who went 3-8 in 1998. The Big West Conference school would appear to be overmatched against Georgia and should hope to fare better than the Bulldogs' 1998 season-opening opponent, Kent, which lost 56-3. Utah State will be no stranger to upper echelon competition, with Utah, Brigham Young and Kansas on the schedule. This is the first time since 1995 that the Aggies have not opened the season with Utah.
