RECAP
RENO, Nevada (Ticker) -- Ken Simonton ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns as Oregon State made Dennis Erickson a winner in his debut with a 28-13 victory over Nevada. Erickson is coaching his second Pac-10 Conference school after a four-year stint with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. He watched Simonton carry 35 times, including scoring runs of 19 and two yards in a 21-point fourth quarter. Erickson guided the University of Miami to national titles in 1989 and 1991. Prior to that, he spent two years at Washington State and this year returned to the Pacific Northwest with Oregon State (1-0). Simonton, who was the first Oregon State freshman to rush for more than 1,000 yards, scored on a five-yard run to offset a three-yard TD toss from Nevada's David Neill to Cleavon Brooks. The Wolf Pack (0-1) took a 10-7 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Mike Phillips with 28 seconds remaining in the first half and extended the margin to 13-7 on Phillips' 44-yarder with 1:29 left in the third quarter. However, Oregon State took the lead for good on a 74-yard pass from Jonathan Smith to Martin Maurer 59 seconds into the fourth quarter. Simonton made it 21-13 at the 8:14 mark with a 19-yard dash, capping an eight-play, 54-yard drive. His one-yard plunge with 24 seconds left ended the scoring and completed a 13-play, 69-yard march. Smith completed 21-of-43 passes for 257 yards with one interception. Robert Prescott caught eight pases for 57 yards and Maurer had 89 yards on two receptions. Neill went 22-of-46 for 287 yards and two interceptions for Nevada, which committed three turnovers. Trevor Insley had 12 catches for 175 yards, while Chris Lemon had 97 yards on 21 rushes. Oregon State has won both meetings between the schools.
