NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) _ Detrick Watson scored three touchdowns and Joe Lopuznik threw for two scores and ran for one as Fairfield routed Iona 42-6 in a season opener on Saturday. Dan Fitzpatrick added two TDs for the Red Stags, who erupted for 42 points after Iona took a 6-0 lead on Le Var Stockton's 24-yard pass to Jocko Leonard five minutes into the game. Fitzpatrick's 2-yard run made it 7-6 with 8:22 left in the first quarter, and Watson ran in from 13 yards with 22 seconds left in the period. Watson's 5-yard run and Lopuznik's 1-yarder made it 28-6 at halftime. Watson caught a 48-yard pass from Lopuznik 59 seconds into the third quarter for a 35-6 lead. Lopuznik, who was 11-of-21 for 197 yards, completed the scoring with a 25-yard pass to Fitzpatrick with 7:16 left in the third quarter.
