BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Corey Crume rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 17-16 victory over Samford Saturday night. Samford tried to tie it in the fourth-quarter, but the attempt failed when Brian Holmes' extra-point kick sailed wide right of the goalposts and Eastern Kentucky (3-1) held on for the win. The Colonels got all the points they needed early in the second quarter, when Crume scored on a 69-yard run, Waylon Chapman hit Alex Bannister with a 20-yard touchdown pass and Jason Martin kicked a 25-yard field goal. Samford (2-2) got on the board just before halftime when Tony Tucker intercepted an Eastern Kentucky pass and returned it 42 yards to the 9-yard line, setting up a Jerome Russell TD run with 15 seconds left. The Bulldogs trailed 17-7 at the half. Holmes added a 25-yard field goal with 5:13 remaining in the third quarter. Then Samford drove 78 yards in nine plays, getting Jim Whaley in position to score on a 2-yard run with 6:06 to go. Holmes missed the PAT. Chapman completed 14 of 23 passes for 183 yards. Derick Logan rushed for 102 yards. Russell rushed 14 times for 103 yards for Samford.
