PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Brown spotted Lafayette a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage but rebounded to score 28 straight points before halftime and went on to win 35-28 Saturday. Four different players rushed for touchdowns for the Bears (2-0), who have won eight straight games dating back to last year. The opening score for Lafayette (0-2) came when linebacker Jon Fistner picked off a deflected pass by Brown's James Perry and returned it 41 yards. But the Bears immediately put together a nine-play, 56-yard drive and tied the game on a 14-yard run by flanker Bill Rackley. Brad Grulke then recovered a fumble by Lafayette quarterback Brian Buczek at the Leopards' 48, and Kevin Coyne scored on a 1-yard run six plays later. Brown stretched its lead to 21-7 with 5:24 left in the second quarter on a 3-yard scoring run by Michael Powell. The Bears' Grulke blocked a punt on Lafayette's next possession and recovered it in the end zone for a 28-7 Brown lead. Lafayette pulled to within 28-21 in the third quarter on touchdown runs of 4 yards and 1 yards by Brian Tuma. But in the fourth quarter Brown linebacker Neil Finneran picked off a Buczek pass at the Lafayette 35. Five plays later, Michael Malan gave Brown some breathing room with a 5-yard touchdown run.
