DE KALB, Ill. (AP) _ Brad Selent kicked a 37-yard field goal with no time remaining Saturday night to give Western Michigan a 24-21 victory over Northern Illinois.

It was a heartbreaker for the hard-luck Huskies (0-4, 0-1 Mid-American Conference), who had rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the final quarter to tie it. Northern Illinois has lost eight in a row and is 2-31 since the middle of the 1996 season.

The Broncos (2-2, 1-0) scored twice in the opening quarter. Frank Bosworth grabbed a 2-yard scoring pass from Tim Lester, and Charles Woods ran 20 yards for a TD.

Northern's William Andrews, who ran 27 times for 157 yards and three TDs, had an 18-yard score to cut the deficit to 14-7 just before halftime.

Lester hooked up with Robert Sanford for a 17-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to restore Western Michigan's 14-point lead.

The Huskies drew even in the fourth when Andrews scored on runs of 2 and 6 yards. Selent's game-winning kick came five plays after a short punt by the Huskies allowed the Broncos to take over on the Northern 41.

Lester finished 16-of-34 for 165 yards, with one interception and three sacks.
