AMHERST, Mass. (AP) _ Giovanni Carmazzi passed for two touchdowns in a 20-point third quarter on Saturday to lead unbeaten Hofstra over Massachusetts 27-14. Carmazzi completed 22 of 35 passes for 253 yards to give the Flying Dutchmen their fifth victory of the season and eighth in a row overall. Marcel Shipp ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns, going over the 100-yard rushing mark for the 16th straight game, as defending Division I-AA national champion UMass fell to 1-3. Deadlocked 7-7 at halftime, Hofstra broke the tie early in the third when Robert Thomas intercepted a pass by Todd Bankhead and ran 15 yards for a touchdown and a 13-7 lead. Before the third quarter was over, Carmazzi passed for 22- and 4-yard touchdowns to give Hofstra a 27-7 lead. He also set up the second touchdown with a 43-yard keeper run. The teams traded long-distance touchdowns in the first half. Hofstra's Vaughn Sanders raced 74 yards for a touchdown on his team's first play from scrimmage of the game. He fractured his left tibia in the second half _ 7 yards short of the school's career rushing record of 2,503 yards. He will undergo surgery Wednesday and a school spokesman said it is possible Sanders could return if the Flying Dutchmen were to advance to the playoffs. UMass pulled even at 6:11 of the second quarter as Shipp ran 64 yards for a touchdown.
