BOX SCORE
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Quarterback Bucky Richardson ran for one score and passed for another and linebacker Dan Dawson made two key plays to lead Rice to a 20-10 victory over turnover-prone Tulsa on Saturday. Dawson had an interception when he snatched a ball being bobbled by Tulsa tight end Keith Carey, setting up the second of two second-half field goals by Derek Crabtree. Dawson then caused and recovered a fumble by TU receiver Jerrold Smith to stop a drive at the Rice 20 with 6:09 left. Tulsa's final threat was snuffed out on an interception by Jason Hebert at the 1-yard line with 2:58 remaining. Rice improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Tulsa lost its fourth consecutive game since opening the season with a victory over Division 1-AA Southwest Missouri. This is the fourth consecutive season in which Tulsa has lost at least four games in succession. Rice's option attack rolled up 309 yards rushing, 118 yards over its season average. Mike Gingrich led the way with 112 yards on 11 carries, while Richardson added 63 yards on 20 carries. Tulsa was limited to 34 yards rushing. Quarterback Wall passed for 290 yards, completing 32 of 52, but had three interceptions. The victory continued Rice coach Ken Hatfield's dominance of TU counterpart Dave Rader. Hatfield is now 6-0 against Rader (4-0 at Rice, 2-0 at Arkansas).< Richardson put Rice ahead 14-7 with a 20-yard pass to wide-open flanker Raphael Tillman with 1:03 left in the second quarter, capping a 68-yard drive. It was the first and only completed pass of the game for the Owls and the third touchdown pass of the season for Richardson. Tulsa, after marching 80 yards on its first possession, reverted back to its season-long offensive funk for the remainder of the first half, gaining 43 yards in 22 plays. Tulsa grabbed the early lead on a 20-yard pass from Wall to Corey Brown. Rice tied the score late in the first quarter on a 60-yard drive capped by a 1-yard run by Richardson.
