WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) _ Wake Forest is off to its best start in 12 years, getting two touchdowns from Morgan Kane in a 17-10 victory over winless Rutgers on Saturday night.

The Demon Deacons (3-1), who struggled after coming off a 24-point victory against previously ranked North Carolina State, are off to their best start since the 1987 team began 5-0.

The Scarlet Knights (0-4) have started the season with four straight losses for only the third time since 1902.

Kane began the fourth quarter with 57 yards rushing, but gained 63 yards on an 83-yard drive that ate up 8:46 on the clock, producing a 29-yard Matt Burdick field goal with 4:19 left.

Kane, averaging 141 yards a game, finished with 120 yards on 34 carries.

Rutgers had a 46-yard completion to the Wake Forest 34 after the Demon Deacons' long drive, but consecutive penalties for intentional grounding and offensive pass interference killed the drive.

The Scarlet Knights lost all hope when Fabian Davis recovered a fumbled punt by Jacki Crooks with 1:30 left and Wake Forest ran out the clock.

The Demon Deacons trailed by three at halftime before getting their offense in gear.

A 46-yard completion from Ben Sankey to Jamie Deese to the Rutgers 1 set up Kane's short plunge for a 14-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Scarlet Knights tried to narrow the gap to one point on their next drive, but Steve Barone missed a 44-yard field goal. Barone also was wide right on a 40-yarder 27 seconds before the half.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 10-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal by Barone and a 62-yard scoring pass from Mike McMahon to freshman Antoine Lovelace.

It was the first career catch for Lovelace, who beat the Wake Forest secondary by 10 yards.

Wake Forest's fourth time in Rutgers territory finally netted some points with two minutes left before halftime. The 17-play, 90-yard drive _ the longest of the season for the Demon Deacons _ was capped by a 10-yard TD pass from Sankey to Kane.

The depleted Rutgers defense suffered yet another injury when safety David Griffin was taken off the field on a stretcher midway through the first quarter with a possible neck injury. He was taken to a hospital for tests, but his condition was not known.

Rutgers also lost starting wide receiver Walter King with a separated shoulder.
