GAME DAY PREVIEW Game time: 12:00pm ET
Miami (Fla.) at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- Top-ranked Florida State, always with a lot on the line, welcomes the last team to win on its home turf, No. 21 Miami, into Doak Campbell Stadium.

This bitter rivalry, once dominated by the Hurricanes (2-2), has turned fully in favor of Florida State (5-0). The Seminoles have won four straight and six of the last 10 meetings between the schools.

With Florida's loss to Alabama last weekend, Florida State now owns the longest home winning streak in the nation at 26. Marshall has won 27 straight at home, but the Thundering Herd have not been in Division I-A for the entirity of the streak.

The Seminoles also have a 44-game home unbeaten streak since a 17-16 defeat to Miami on November 16, 1991. Gerry Thomas missed a 34-yard field goal with 25 seconds left as the second-ranked Hurricanes beat No. 1 FSU in a game known as "Wide Right I." Miami went on to win the national championship that season and the next year, in "Wide Right II," became the last team to beat Florida State in consecutive seasons.

With scholarship limitations now behind them, the Hurricanes have steadily moved out of a hole that saw them go 5-6 in 1997. The low point of that season was their most recent visit to Doak Campbell Stadium, a 47-0 loss.

Miami appeared ready for a return to the national championship picture September 18, leading Penn State by three points with less than two minutes left and needing only two yards to seal the win. But after failing to convert on fourth down, they allowed a game-winning 79-yard scoring pass to Chafie Fields and lost, 27-23. The following weekend, they held a 20-point lead in the third quarter before inspired East Carolina rallied for a 27-23 triumph.

Miami had a week off to prepare for the Seminoles, who gave coach Bobby Bowden a five-year contract extension on Monday. Bowden guided FSU to a 51-23 trouncing of Duke last weekend and the Seminoles have scored no less than 41 points in any game this season.

Florida State allowed 35 points to high-powered Georgia Tech and Miami is one of the few teams in the country with enough speed to keep up with the Seminoles, who are a 17-point favorite.

The loss of FSU receivers Peter Warrick and Laveranues Coles, suspended and dismissed, respectively, following felony theft charges, will leave a big hole for the Seminoles to fill.

Miami is led by running back James Jackson, but versatile quarterback Kenny Kelly concerns Bowden more.

"We've got to try and contain Kelly if we can," Bowden said. "He's excellent at breaking containment and running for a first down. He's very dangerous and he's got a good arm."
