HONOLULU (AP) _ Chad Richardson ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth Saturday night to lead Rice to a 38-19 victory over Hawaii.

The win was the third straight for the Owls (3-3, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference). The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Hawaii (4-2, 2-1).

Rice dominated the game with its triple option run attack, which accounted for 354 of its 382 yards and kept Hawaii's defense off guard and on the field. Richardson finished with 168 yards on 28 carries.

Rice took the second half kickoff and scored one play later when Richardson scampered around right guard and untouched down the left side of the field for a 60-yard touchdown to give the Owls a 17-10.

The Rainbow Warriors cut the deficit to 17-13 after Eric Hannum kicked a 20-yard field goal midway through the quarter.

After forcing a Rice punt, Hawaii turned the ball over when running back Avion Weaver fumbled and Jarrett Erwin recovered on the Hawaii 11. Three plays later, Richardson hit Jamie Tyler from 7 yards out to make it 24-10.

After forcing a Hawaii punt, Richardson took over again, capping a 14-play, 85-yard, 8:05 drive with a 10-yard run with 8:35 to play.

Mike Gingrich capped the scoring for Rice with an 8-yard run with 3:52 left. Avion Weaver scored on a 1-yard run for Hawaii with 2:58 left.

Hannum kicked a 35-field goal on Hawaii's opening drive, but the Owls responded on their first series, with Richardson running 19 yards off left tackle to make it 7-3.

Hawaii responded with an 80-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dan Robinson to Dwight Carter with 2:38 left in the first quarter.

Rice tied the game 10-10 when Derek Crabtree kicked a 30-yard field goal 2:18 before halftime.

Robinson, who entered the game as the WAC's leading passer, was 25 of 53 for 400 yards and two interceptions. Channon Harris had 11 catches for 125 yards, while Carter finished with eight catches for 138 yards.

It was the first-ever meeting between the schools.
