MIAMI (Ticker) -- After three heart-breaking losses, 24th-ranked Miami finally gets what appears to be a break in the schedule when it hosts Big East Conference doormat Temple.
The Hurricanes started the season with wins over Ohio State and Florida A&M, apparently ready to make a charge back to the top of the national scene. But late in their third game, holding a 23-20 lead, two plays turned the season south. James Jackson failed on a 4th-and-2 and on the next play, Kevin Thompson threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Chafie Fields, giving Penn State a 27-23 win. The next weekend, the Hurricanes fell by the same score to an inspired East Carolina team in a game played 80 miles from the Pirates' campus due to damage inflicted by Hurricane Floyd. To top it off, Miami (2-3, 0-0 Big East) appeared to get a great break when Florida State wide receiver and Heisman Trophy hopeful Peter Warrick was suspended from the team after getting charged with grand theft. The Hurricanes played valiantly on the road against the top-ranked team in the nation but lost, 31-21. Now comes Temple (1-5, 1-1), which lost its first five games of the season before surprising Boston College, 24-14, last weekend. The Owls are nearing the end of a stretch in which they play six of seven games on the road. They opened the season at home, then played four straight away from home before returning to Philadelphia to beat B.C. Temple visits West Virginia next weekend then plays two of its final three games at home. Miami holds a 7-1 record in the all-time series and has not lost to the Owls since a 34-0 defeat in the first meeting between the schools, back in 1930.
In the wins, Miami has scored no less than 36 points and allowed more than 15 only once, outscoring them 310-81. They Hurricanes have an average margin of victory of 32 points, have notched 508 yards per game and 25 first downs per win.
