GAME DAY PREVIEW Game time: 12:00am ET
Texas A&M at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Nebraska (Ticker) -- Ninth-ranked Nebraska and No. 18 Texas A&M hope to derail one another's hopes to reach the Big 12 Conference championship game.

The Cornhuskers (7-1, 4-1 Big 12 North) control their own destiny to win the North, but the road is tough, with unbeaten Kansas State and Colorado looming after this game. Texas A&M (6-2, 3-2 South) is a game behind Texas in the South and has the same amount of losses as Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

Nebraska has a 6-2 lead in the all-time series, but Texas A&M won the last meeting between the schools, 28-21, last season. The year before, the Cornhuskers demolished the Aggies in the Big 12 championship, 54-15, for their fifth straight win in the series. Nebraska is 4-1 at home against the Aggies.

The Cornhuskers are coming off a 24-17 win over stubborn Kansas, as former quarterback Bobby Newcombe caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Eric Crouch with 3:24 left. Newcombe had returned a punt 86 yards for a score earlier in the game.

Texas A&M followed its 51-6 loss to Oklahoma with a 21-3 victory over Oklahoma State last weekend but still is searching for its first 100-yard rusher this season.

With a balanced attack, the Aggies have seen only one player, Eric Bernard, run for as many as 80 yards in a game, and that came against Oklahoma State. No running back averages more than 10 carries per game, but four players register over seven per contest.

In addition, Texas A&M is averaging 255 passing yards per game, putting this team on pace to break the 1986 school record of 244.6. Randy McCown is having a big season through the air, completing 121-of-222 passes (54.5 percent) for 1,901 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also is third on the team in rushing.

Nebraska has the ninth-ranked rushing offense in the nation at 244.6 yards per game, ranks 93rd in passing efficiency offense and is 35th overall at just over 400 yards per contest, but it is 15th in scoring.

This team relies on its defensive unit, nicknamed the Blackshirts. The Blackshirts rank fifth nationally in total defense, passing defense and scoring defense and eighth against the run.
