GAME DAY PREVIEW Game time: 12:00am ET
Wisconsin at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Heisman Trophy candidates Ron Dayne and Drew Brees will be on display when 10th-ranked Wisconsin visits Ross-Ade Stadium to battle No. 21 Purdue in what should be a viewer-friendly Big Ten Conference game.

Dayne, Wisconsin's bruising running back, and Brees, who guides Purdue's wide-open passing offense, are on the short list of players capable of taking home college football's most glamorous award. A good performance in this game would boost either's campaign.

The 5-10, 252-pound Dayne ranks third in the nation in rushing with over 155 yards per game on the ground. Brees is second in the nation in total offense with 339.4 yards per contest and ranks 29th in passing efficiency.

Dayne is just 321 yards shy of breaking the NCAA career rushing record, established by Texas' Ricky Williams last season. Dayne, currently in third place with 5,959 yards, needs 123 yards to move past Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett into second place.

The biggest question on senior day for Boilermakers fans might be if Brees, a junior, is playing his final game in a Purdue uniform.

Brees ranks in the top three in six categories in Purdue's record book -- passing attempts, completions, completion percentage, yards, touchdowns and total offense. With credentials like that and NFL tools, he would be a high draft pick if he decides to forgo his senior season.

This will definitely be the final home game for 17 Boilermakers, including wide receivers Chris Daniels and Randall Lane and running back J. Crabtree. All the trio has done is helped Purdue go 15-2 at home under Joe Tiller, with both losses coming to Penn State.

In addition to the Heisman race, this game holds huge postseason ramifications for both teams. With Penn State ranked second in the Bowl Championship Series ratings, a second-place league finish could send the Badgers to the Rose Bowl.

Purdue is heading to a bowl game for the third straight season, but it would like to play in a post-new year game for just the second time in school history. The Boilermakers participated in the 1967 Rose Bowl.

The Big Ten has tie-ins with two games that will be played on New Year's Day 2000, the Outback and Citrus Bowls.

Wisconsin holds a 35-27-8 advantage in the all-time series between the schools.
