AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) -- Mike Thiessen ran for a touchdown, Corey Nelson returned an interception for another score and Air Force shut down the nation's top rushing attack in a 28-0 victory over Army on Saturday.

The victory gave Air Force its third straight straight Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which goes to the service academy with the best record in their head-to-head matchups. Air Force (5-3), which defeated Navy 19-14 earlier in the year, has won the trophy nine of the last 11 years.

The Falcons gained 323 yards and held Army, which had been averaging 320 rushing yards per game, to 90 on the ground and 100 total.

Thiessen and Cale Bonds shared quarterback duties for the Falcons, who scored 19 points in the second quarter to take a 22-0 halftime lead. The Falcons added two field goals in the final period.

Army (3-5) crossed midfield only once, reaching the Air Force 25-yard line midway through the third period. The Black Knights squandered the scoring chance, however, when two runs went for losses and Matt Parker was short on a 51-yard field goal try.

Sophomore Chad Jenkins started his second straight game for Army in place of the injured Joe Gerena, but Jenkins couldn't get Army's offense untracked.

Thiessen came off the bench to ignite an unproductive Air Force offense in the second quarter. Bonds, who had missed the previous three games with a sprained ankle, moved the Falcons on their first three series but they managed only a field goal.

Thiessen took over early in the second quarter and ran for 14, 26 and 24 yards on consecutive carries, capping a drive that ended on Thiessen's 1-yard run with 10:34 left in the half.

Later in the quarter, Nelson, leaping in the air to try to deflect Jenkins' pass into the right flat, came down with the ball and ran 27 yards with the interception for a touchdown and a 19-0 lead.

Bonds returned and passed Air Force in position for Dave Adams to kick a 46-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the half.

The Falcons also recorded a safety early in the second period. With Army at its own 9-yard line, Jenkins was hit by linebacker Matt Pommer, causing an errant pitchout that bounced toward the goal line. Army's Brandan Rooney recovered in the end zone, preventing a possible Air Force touchdown but yielding the safety.

Adams and Jackson Whiting each kicked two field goals for the Falcons. Whiting now is 11-for-11 this year and has kicked 12 in a row dating to last season.
