Cards' Redman too much for Bearcats

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Chris Redman reached two more career milestones -- 1,000 completions and 12,000 yards passing -- while steadying Louisville to a 23-13 victory Saturday over Cincinnati.

After failing to score a first-half touchdown for only the second time this season, Louisville (7-3, 4-1 Conference USA) got rolling as Redman picked apart Cincinnati's secondary with short, quick passes.

Redman, who holds the Division I-A career marks for completions and attempts, finished 32-of-49 for 367 yards with a 1-yard touchdown leap. He became the second big-school passer to top 12,000 career yards -- Ty Detmer threw for a record 15,031 for Brigham Young from 1988-91.

Cincinnati (3-6, 0-4) held Louisville to one field goal on its first four drives inside the 15-yard line and led 7-3 after a goal-line stand early in the third quarter.

The Bearcats couldn't hold on against Redman's short-pass onslaught and fell to 1-5 since their upset of Wisconsin.

Deontey Kenner's 2-yard run cut it to 17-13 with 2:15 left and Cincinnati got the onside kick, but Bud Herring intercepted Kenner's pass and returned it 66 yards for a clinching score.

Cincinnati changed from its all-black home uniform for the first time since 1995, wearing red shirts for its homecoming game. The Bearcats changed colors but had the same problems containing Redman, who passed for what was then a school-record 431 yards in a 69-19 win over Cincinnati last season.

Louisville kicker Jon Hilbert hurt his leg on a kickoff following his 29-yard field goal on the game's opening possession, and the Cardinals went for it on fourth down in scoring range the rest of the way.

The Cardinals came up empty on two deep drives -- Charles Sheffield was knocked out of bounds a foot from the goal line after a fourth-down reception and Frank Moreau was thrown for a loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1 early in the third quarter.

Moreau's 9-yard run put Louisville ahead to stay 10-7 with 6:08 left in the third quarter. Moreau, held to 10 yards on 8 first-half carries, finished with 112 yards on 29 attempts.

Redman's 999th completion provided the game's oddest play. His pass was tipped back to him by a Cincinnati lineman, and Redman jumped and slapped the ball forward like a volleyball spike. Arnold Jackson caught it for a 10-yard gain, part of a 15-catch, 174-yard performance.
