FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (Ticker) -- Suddenly back in position to
defend its national title, third-ranked Tennessee plays the team
that provided its biggest scare last season when it visits
Arkansas in a Southeastern Conference game. Last season, the Razorbacks (5-3, 2-3 SEC West) marched into Tennessee unbeaten and were ready to spoil the perfect record of the Volunteers (7-1, 4-1 East). Then came the play that will live in Tennessee lore and Arkansas infamy. Razorbacks quarterback Clint Stoerner inexplicably fumbled with 1:43 remaining and Tennessee took advantage by driving to the winning touchdown and a 28-24 triumph. Arkansas appeared to have the game in hand, attempting to kill the clock at midfield with a two-point lead after stopping Tennessee on four straight plays. But Stoerner, as he was rolling away from the line, stumbled and tried to brace his fall by placing the football on the ground. The ball came loose and was recovered by defensive tackle Billy Ratliff on the Arkansas 43-yard line and the Vols gave the ball to Travis Henry five straight times, including a one-yard touchdown run. Much less is at stake for Arkansas in this game, although a win would vault the Razorbacks back into the rankings and qualify them for a bowl berth. Tennessee once again is fighting for the national championship, having moved from fifth to second in the most recent Bowl Championship Series rankings. This is the 11th all-time meeting between the teams, with Arkansas pulling off its only win in Knoxville in 1992, when Todd Wright kicked a field goal on the final play of the game in a 25-24 upset.
