GAME DAY PREVIEW Game time: 3:30pm ET
Washington at UCLA

PASADENA (Ticker) -- With a Rose Bowl berth in sight, Rick Neuheisel will coach against his alma mater for the first time when 22nd-ranked Washington visits UCLA in a Pac-10 Conference battle.

The Huskies (6-3, 5-1 Pac-10) control their own fate. If they beat the Bruins (3-6, 1-5) and Washington State in the traditional Apple Cup game next weekend, they return here on New Year's Day to play the Big Ten Conference champion.

A loss by Washington opens the door for Stanford, Oregon or Arizona State to capture the conference crown.

Neuheisel, the 38-year-old coach of the Huskies, completed 198-of-290 passes for 2,480 yards and 15 touchdowns during his UCLA career, which at the time placed him sixth on the school's all-time passing yards list. He still holds school records in completion percentage for both a game and season.

Ironically, Neuheisel completed 25-of-27 passes, including 18 straight at one point, to set the single-game percentage record against Washington in 1983. He was the Rose Bowl MVP in 1984, when the Bruins beat Illinois, 45-9.

Neuheisel went 33-14 in four years as coach of Colorado and, after early struggles, has Washington riding a three-game winning streak, including a key 35-20 victory over Stanford on October 30.

In that win over the Cardinal, quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo became the first quarterback in Division I-A history to pass for 300 yards while rushing for 200. Controlling him is UCLA's best chance of winning.

But the Bruins are ranked 112th out of 114 teams in total defense, allowing 469.4 yards per game. Only Division I-A newcomer Buffalo and Stanford are worse than UCLA, which won the Pac-10 title and was national title contention a season ago.

Tuiasosopo has passed for 1,962 yards this year, the second-highest total among Pac-10 quarterbacks. Oregon State's Jonathan Smith leads the league with 2,327 passing yards.

UCLA has won two straight over the Huskies and leads the all-time series, 29-27-2.
