Cal Poly (3-7) trailed 7-6 at the half, and St. Mary's (2-9) took a 14-6 lead in the third on a 5-yard scoring strike from Gus Papanikolas to Eric Billeci. But Cal Poly tied the game on Ryan McCarty's 17-yard run and a two-point conversion, then increased the lead to 21-14 in the fourth. Rivas' field goal put the Mustangs up for good with 2:59 remaining and although the Gaels scored on a 35-yard pass to Marc Kleiman, they could get no closer.
