ANN ARBOR, Michigan (Ticker) -- Fourth-ranked Michigan, minus starting quarterback Drew Henson, will try to remain perfect against the Mid-American Conference when it opens its season against Bowling Green. The Wolverines (0-0) are 12-0 against teams that currently call the MAC their league. Michigan is 6-0 vs. Eastern Michigan, owns a pair of wins over both Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan and single victories against Central Michigan and Buffalo. It is the first time since 1931 that the Wolverines are facing a MAC team in the season opener. Michigan beat Central State Teachers College, now Central Michigan, 27-0 on October 3, 1931. If it is time for Bowling Green (0-0) to snap that streak, at least it is getting a nicked Michigan squad. Henson underwent foot surgery on August 24 and will miss at least this game and possibly more time. "It was a non-contact injury," coach Lloyd Carr said. "Drew planted his foot and said he felt something pop. This is disappointing for Drew and our football team as he was preparing to make his first career start. The good news is he will return." Henson split time with Tom Brady the last two seasons and completed 68-of-137 passes for 800 yards and six touchdowns in 18 games. He spends his summers playing minor league baseball and was traded last month from the New York Yankees to the Cincinnati Reds in the Denny Neagle deal. The injury will force redshirt freshman John Navarre into his first collegiate start. The 6-6, 228-pound Navarre led Cudahy High School in Wisconsin to three straight conference titles and was an honorable mention All-USA selection by USA Today. Navarre can be thankful that he has a lot of talent surrounding him. David Terrell and Marquise Walker form perhaps the Big Ten's best wide receiver tandem and running back Anthony Thomas is a Heisman Trophy candidate. The Falcons are coming off a 5-6 campaign and need to rebuild their offense. Sophomore Andy Sahm is back at quarterback and will look often for wide receiver Kurt Gerling. Defensively, Bowling Green's 4-3 should be solid, with the entire starting line back from last season. The Wolverines have won six straight season openers at Michigan Stadium and a win on Saturday would give them a victory in a campaign's first contest for the 100th time in school history. They are 99-18-3 in season openers. Bowling Green's campus is located just 70 miles from Ann Arbor. The Falcons are the 10th first-time opponent for the Wolverines since 1990, with Michigan holding a 9-0 mark in those games.
