LINCOLN, Nebraska (Ticker) -- Few teams are faster out of the gate than top-ranked Nebraska, which begins a season of huge expectations Saturday by hosting San Jose State in the first-ever meeting between the schools. The Huskers have won their last 14 season openers, the longest current streak in the nation, and have scored at least 42 points in each of their last five. The last time Nebraska christened a season with a defeat was in 1985 when it lost to Florida State, one of its main competitors for a national title in 2000. San Jose State was just 3-7 in 1999, but Huskers coach Frank Solich is taking nothing for granted. "There are those that say it should be an easy win," Solich said. "We never view it that way at Nebraska." Realistically, Solich has no reasons to have any sleepless nights this week. The Cornhuskers lose only four starters from an offense that ranked fourth nationally in rushing, 12th in scoring and 44th in total offense. They return at least one skill position starter at every position, including quarterback Eric Crouch, a Heisman Trophy candidate. As a sophomore last fall, he became the first Cornhusker quarterback to lead the team in rushing since 1955. Dan Alexander, Correll Buckhalter and Dahrran Diedrick all have surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark and all will see action at I-back this year. The defense is led by linebacker Carlos Polk, who is expected to contend for some national honors. San Jose State, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, returns 13 starters from a team that upset Pac-10 champion Stanford but closed the year with five straight defeats. Tailback Deonce Whitaker is back after running for 769 yards last season.
