Florida jumps two spots in second week

Associated Press

Florida State and Penn State remained 1-2 in the Bowl Championship Series standings Monday, with Virginia Tech still third but falling farther behind the Nittany Lions.

The BCS' computer-generated standings also placed Florida fourth, up two spots from last week and ahead of Tennessee and Kansas State.

The final BCS standings on Dec. 5 determine which teams play in college football's designated national title game -- the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4. The standings are based on a formula that considers The Associated Press media poll and the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, eight computer rankings, strength-of-schedule and number of losses.

The Seminoles (9-0), No. 1 in both polls since the preseason, had 3.11 points in the standings -- 1 point for poll average, 1.43 for computer rank average, 0.68 for strength-of-schedule, and zero for losses. Florida State defeated Virginia 35-10 Saturday.

Penn State (9-0) had 5.48 points -- 2 for poll average, 3 for computer rank average, 0.48 for strength-of-schedule and zero for losses. The Nittany Lions beat Illinois 27-7 Saturday.

Virginia Tech (7-0) had 7.18 points -- 3 for poll average, 1.86 for computer rank average, 2.32 for strength-of-schedule and zero losses.

Last week, Virginia Tech trailed Penn State by .5 points; this week the difference is 1.7 points.

The Hokies, who beat Pittsburgh 30-17 Saturday, saw their strength-of-schedule fall from 42nd to 58th toughest of the 114 I-A teams. Florida State's schedule was rated 17th toughest; Penn State's 12th.

Also, Virginia Tech was first in four of the eight computer ratings, down from five firsts last week.

Florida (7-1) moved up based on its 30-14 win over Georgia, ranked No. 14 in this week's AP poll. The Gators have 10.53 points.

Tennessee was in fifth place with 11.03 points, followed by Kansas State (12.76), Georgia Tech (18.73), Nebraska (20.01), Alabama (23.08) and Wisconsin (24.05).
