Byrd at Syracuse game

Senior defensive back David Byrd wasn't about to miss his final home game for the Syracuse Orangemen. Six days after he was repeatedly stabbed during a melee in front of a city bar, Byrd made an emotional appearance Saturday in the Carrier Dome before the Orangemen played Temple. After Syracuse's 27-10 victory, Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni read the following statement from Byrd: "It felt good to grab my jersey and walk out and see all my teammates, fans and friends that have supported me when I needed them the most. "I was able to get here at kickoff and let everyone know that I was OK, and that I was pulling for them as they had been pulling for me all week. The emotion I felt walking onto the field, with my name being called for the last time, was unbelievable."

"Any continued operation of the establishment would present a serious risk to the health, safety and welfare of the community," the authority said in a unanimous vote. Pending a hearing, the bar will be allowed to remain open but only to serve non-alcoholic beverages.

The bar has attracted police attention in the past, and patrons have been picked up there on weapons, drugs and assault charges, police Chief John Falge said.

The maximum penalty for the bar's eight alleged violations of the Alcohol Beverage Control Law is a revocation of its liquor license.

City officials say last Sunday morning's brawl is leading them to crack down on problem bars throughout the city. Five men, including three SU football players, were stabbed and beaten outside the bar by another group of men police said belong to a gang.

David Byrd, a 21-year-old senior defensive back from Schenectady, N.Y., underwent several hours of surgery after being stabbed five times in the neck and back.

Junior defensive end Duke Pettijohn, 22, of Mattapan, Mass., and sophomore reserve lineman Giovanni DeLoatch, 20, of Teaneck, N.J., were treated for cuts.
