North Carolina's slide gets steeper

ATLANTA (AP) -- Danielle Donehew scored 22 points and Jamie Kruppa pulled down 12 rebounds as Georgia Tech rolled to a 55-44 upset of North Carolina (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) Thursday night.

In losing four straight games for the first time since 1991, the Tar Heels (9-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) had their lowest point total since a 51-44 loss to North Carolina State on Feb. 10, 1987.

The Yellow Jackets (10-5, 3-3) forced North Carolina to shoot only 32.4 percent from the field, including 17.1 percent in the first half.

LaQuanda Barksdale, who leads the ACC in scoring with 19.1 points per game, was 4-for-19 from the field and finished with eight points. Barksdale also pulled down 11 rebounds.

North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said the team would have an announcement Monday regarding the status of former starting point guard Nikki Teasley, who took an indefinite leave of absence on Jan. 9.

Donehew was 8-for-13 from the field, including 5-for-6 on 3-pointers in the first half. Tech outrebounded the Tar Heels 46-22 but committed 26 turnovers to North Carolina's 14.

Juana Brown led the Tar Heels with 11 points, and Jackie Higgins finished with 17 rebounds.
