TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- When the play broke down, Peppi Browne came through for Duke. Browne converted a three-point play with 27 seconds remaining to break a tie as the ninth-ranked Blue Devils held off Florida State 59-54 Monday night.
Browne, who had a game-high 18 points and six assists, scored on a drive to the basket and was fouled by Florida State's Shinikki Whiting. Browne made the free throw to push Duke's lead to 57-54. "The play broke down and Peppi did a great job of taking what was there," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said. "That was obviously the key play of the game for us. Peppi just played a great overall game for us offensively and defensively." After Florida State missed on its last possession, Duke's Rochelle Parent made two free throws with two seconds left to account for the final score. "We're getting tired of hearing 'we're so close, we're so close,"' Seminoles coach Sue Semrau said. "But the truth is, we are that close. As soon as we can pull one out at the end, we're going to be a great team." The Blue Devils (17-2, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) have beaten Florida State (8-9, 1-6) 12 consecutive times. The Seminoles trailed 54-48 with 3:12 remaining, but scored six straight points to tie the game at 54 with 1:35 left.
