Catchings, Randall spark Vols

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi was playing its sixth game in 13 days and judging from the results, the Lady Rebels would have rather have taken the night off.

Tamika Catchings scored 19 points as Tennessee (No. 3 ESPN/USA Today, No. 2 AP) held Mississippi to 30 percent shooting and made a late-game run to pull away for a 70-49 victory on Thursday night.

Tennessee (20-3, 8-1 Southeastern Conference) held a 34-25 lead after Semeka Randall hit a jumper with 12:23 remaining in the game.

Randall scored 16 points and Kara Lawson added 12 for Tennessee.

"In the first half, we had good opportunities, but we didn't make good plays," Tennessee coach Pat Summit said. "In the second half, I thought we played better. However, to be the team we want to be, we have to play better than we did tonight. Physically, we were here to play, but we weren't mentally."

Mississippi (11-11, 0-9) cut the lead to 34-31 with 11:03 left on two 3-pointers by Kayla Madewell. The Lady Vols led 36-33 at the 10:26 mark before going on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes.

Ole Miss didn't challenge again.

Randall scored seven of her 19 points in the final run.

Frankie Boyd and Madewell led Ole Miss with 13 points each.

The Lady Vols jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first eight minutes, before Takela Corbitt's 3-pointer to end the Ole Miss scoring drought with 12:04 left in the first half.

The Lady Rebels were able to stay within striking distance the remainder of the first half, cutting Tennessee's lead to five points on three occasions. Tennessee led at 28-19 at the half.

"We fought and scrapped all game," said Lady Rebel head coach Ron Aldy. "Then they went on that run (in the second half). The final score really wasn't reflective of the game."
