Texas wears down tired Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale had a simple explanation for her team's surprising loss to Texas: The Longhorns outplayed the Sooners (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP).

"You can't give up 31 second-chance points and deserve to win," Coale said. "We looked really tired and defeated and couldn't stop them."

Caton Hill, Carla Littleton
Texas center Carla Littleton scored 14 points in the Longhorns' surprise victory.
Texas built a 13-point lead in the first half, then held off a brief challenge and shocked the Sooners 77-70 on Wednesday night.

Texas (17-8, 8-4 Big 12) took control at the start, but a layup by Stacy Dales with 44 seconds left in the half brought the Sooners within 39-36. Carla Littleton's jumper with nine seconds remaining gave Texas a 41-36 halftime lead.

Joruth Woods paced the Longhorns with 15 points, Littleton had 14 points and seven rebounds and Edwina Brown, who averages 21 points per game, had 12.

"I was real into the game and making shots but I let my team down when I picked up those two quick fouls and had to sit down on the bench," Brown said.

Brown played just six minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls. Leading 12-6 when Brown went out, Texas made eight of its next nine shots and led 29-16 with 8:57 left.

It was the first Big 12 home loss for the Sooners (20-5, 10-2), who came within a point, 54-53, with just over 11 minutes remaining on a layup by Phylesha Whaley.

A jumper by Woods followed by a layup from Littleton gave the Longhorns a 58-53 advantage and Texas held on from there.

Whaley led all scorers with 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Sooners.

"When we don't play well, it's frustrating," said Dales, who added 12 points, four rebounds and six assists for Oklahoma. "Texas deserved to win, they played well."

Texas outrebounded the Sooners 45-35 and had 31 points off of second-chance opportunities.
