BOX SCORE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Penn State put on a record-setting defensive clinic against Indiana. Lisa Shepherd scored 19 points and Andrea Garner added 17 points and 10 rebounds as No. 6 Penn State pounded Indiana 74-36 Thursday night. The Lady Lions (21-3, 12-1 Big Ten) used a 20-2 run in the early minutes of the second half to stretch their winning streak to five games. Penn State has won 17 of its last 18. Indiana's output was its lowest since starting Big Ten play in 1981. "It all starts with defense. It all starts with them keeping their heads up," Penn State coach Rene Portland said. "The guards picked it up. Helen (Darling) just refused to give one of their players an inch in either direction and you just saw the whole team feed off of her energy defensively." "This was a game in which none of our players stepped forward offensively and scored for us," Indiana coach Jim Izard said. "We could have avoided breaking whatever record we just broke by keeping Jill in and scoring baskets at the end, but it was more important to try to get players to step it up and play." The Hoosiers (9-15, 4-9) went scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the first half as Penn State went on a 14-0 run to open up a 21-point lead. Jill Chapman ended the drought with a basket at the 11:39 mark. The Hoosiers shot 14 percent (5-for-35) from the floor in the second half and just 22 percent for the game. Indiana scored only 13 points in the second half. "We got some easy buckets in the second half," Portland said. "When you get layups, that helps your field goal percentage real easy. That came off our defense. We got our running game going and we just did a better job of shooting the ball. "We were taking too many 3-point shots in the first half. In the second half we attacked a little more and got a little more out of it," she said. "There's 19 minutes on the clock, it's 29-26 and we get beat 30-plus points," Izard said. "As I look back on that, I take full responsibility. I know what's happening. Our team is physically worn out. We're having to play so many players, so few players for so many minutes, you can just see it. The legs weren't there, the stamina wasn't there. They weren't cutting and moving. They weren't getting things done." The Hoosiers cut a 29-23 halftime deficit to three, but the Lady Lions outscored Indiana 30-6 through the next 16 minutes to take a 62-32 lead. "People wanted to know what I said at halftime," Portland said. "I thought we were playing their 3-point shot well. And I didn't think we were playing that hard. We weren't running, we were playing at their pace. I think we came out and rebounded better in the second half and turned around to lead us to some easy scores." Chrissy Falcone had 13 points and Maren Walseth 11 for Penn State. Chapman led the Hoosiers with 10 points and nine rebounds. Penn State shot just 38 percent from the field in the first half, but still led by six at halftime. Penn State made just 2-of-10 3-point attempts. Indiana shot just 31 percent from the field in the half and made just 2-of-7 3-pointers. The Hoosiers compounded their poor shooting by turning the ball over nine times in the first half. The Lady Lions used an 11-2 run and rallied from an early deficit to take a 15-10 lead. Garner scored six consecutive points and Shepherd added five during the stretch that lasted just over four minutes as the Lady Lions grabbed a five-point edge. Indiana fell behind 21-13, but got within four points when Rainey Alting scored with 4:10 remaining in the first half. Penn State answered with Falcone's 3-pointer.
