Devils brush off Seminoles at home

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Duke's defense was everything Florida State feared it would be -- dominating.

Duke (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) smothered Florida State's transition offense, forced 22 turnovers and dominated the boards 43-27 in an 87-52 rout of the Seminoles on Thursday.

"Duke was phenomenal," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said. "From the opening tip, they were smarter, they were more aggressive, they got every loose ball, they played tremendous defense, they killed us on the boards. There wasn't any one aspect of the game where we weren't outplayed tonight."

Senior reserve Missy West, who suffered a serious knee injury in her freshman year, scored 17 points for Duke (23-4, 12-3 Atlantic Coast Conference).

"When I first got here, I dreamed of being a top player. Then when I hurt my knee, I didn't even know if I'd ever be back," West said. "It's good to be on the floor, even if it's as a substitute."

Georgia Schweitzer finished with 16 points and five assists and Lauren Rice had 15 points and four assists. Michele Matyasovsky and Sheanna Mosch scored 12 each, and Mosch grabbed 11 rebounds to notch her first career double-double.

Florida State (11-15, 4-11) was led by Brooke Wyckoff's 15 points. Latavia Coleman had 11 and April Traylor scored 10, but the Seminoles made just 20-of-63 shots from the floor, while Duke hit 34-of-59.

"Their defense was tremendous, and so was their rebounding," Semrau said. "They play a sagging man defense and force you to take a lot of shots outside the paint. And they do a great job of keeping you to one shot."

West and Rice each scored six points in a 16-2 run Duke used to take control in the first half.

Mosch capped the run with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 5:01 to play in the first half, putting Duke up 38-18. Florida State never again got closer than 16 points.

"I thought they got a little fatigued toward the end of the first half," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said. "We just kept running fresh faces in at them, and they got a little tired."

Rice scored 13 first-half points and Schweitzer 11 to pace the Blue Devils to a 47-24 lead at the break. Duke led by as much as 79-40 before its starters left the game with 4:44 to play.
