Scarlet Knights keep pace with Eagles

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half Saturday, leading Rutgers (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) to a 70-47 victory over St. John's.

With the victory, Rutgers (19-6, 11-4 Big East) remained tied for third place in the Big East with No. 17 Boston College. The third-place team receives a first-round bye in the conference tournament that begins March 4.

Top-ranked Connecticut defeated No. 5 Notre Dame 77-59 on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Big East and clinch the regular-season title.

Shawnetta Stewart added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Scarlet Knights, whose fifth-ranked defense forced 22 turnovers and held the Red Storm to 35 percent shooting.

Giani Bowles led St. John's (9-17, 4-11) with 14 points and Eukeisha Iton added seven.

Ahead by nine at halftime, Rutgers extended the lead to 40-24 on a jumper by Usha Gilmore to cap an 8-0 run.

Sutton-Brown's 3-point play gave the Scarlet Knights a 51-30 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. Sutton-Brown, who played 20 minutes, finished 6-for-9 from the field.

St. John's took its first lead, 15-13, on a 3-pointer by Bowles with 7:55 remaining in the half. Then Rutgers went on a 16-3 run capped by a reverse layup by Stewart.

Davalyn Cunningham scored eight of her 10 points in the run for Rutgers, which led 29-20 at halftime.

Rutgers held the Red Storm to 29 percent shooting in the first half, including just two field goals in the final eight minutes.

The Scarlet Knights finish the reguilar season at Villanova Tuesday against a team that upset them earlier in the season.
