Georgia defense overcomes cold shooting

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Andy Landers saw something good in No. 2 Georgia's 63-45 rout of Kentucky in the SEC tournament quarterfinals Friday. That allowed him to overlook -- for now -- his Lady Bulldogs' problems shooting the ball.

The Lady Bulldogs (29-2) won their 15th straight game despite hitting only four field goals in the final 12 minutes of the first half.

Tiffany Wait and Angie Ball
Kentucky's Tiffany Wait puts a shot up over Georgia's Angie Ball. Wait finished with five points on 2-for-13 shooting.
"The good thing about this team is we can afford to do that for a little bit in the course of a game because the bright side as a defense is that we were very, very good," Landers said.

They bailed out the offense by forcing No. 9 seed Kentucky into eight turnovers in the first nine minutes. Kentucky (15-14) wound up turning the ball over 23 times, which Georgia converted into 24 points.

Kentucky coach Bernadette Mattox, now 1-6 against her alma mater, said Georgia was very intense, especially on defense.

"That's the kind of club that wins championships," Mattox said of Georgia, which has never won a national title despite five trips to the NCAA Final Four.

Georgia, the tournament's top seed, will play Mississippi State in the semifinals Saturday. Mississippi State beat Auburn 66-56.

Coco Miller didn't suffer from Georgia's offensive problems. She has been the Lady Bulldogs' hottest shooter during their winning streak, and she scored 23 points. Angie Ball added 12 points for Georgia. Kelly Miller, the coaches' pick as the SEC player of the year, had nine.

Landers said he wasn't worried because his Lady Bulldogs were very close on hitting some spectacular plays in the first half.

"I challenged some of them today to turn it up a little bit better, and I'm sure they will," he said.

The Lady Bulldogs started their quest for their first tourney title since 1986 by trying to wear out No. 9 seed Kentucky, and it worked quickly as Georgia never trailed in jumping to a 19-6 lead at the 11:46 mark.

Georgia suddenly couldn't find the basket, making just three field goals the rest of the half. Kentucky put together an 8-0 spurt and pulled to 19-14 on a bucket by Rita Adams with 7:56 to go.

That would be as close as the Wildcats would get as Coco Miller finally ended a nearly six-minute stretch without a field goal with a bucket at 5:55. She also made a 3-pointer and added two free throws as Georgia led 31-20 at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs padded their lead in the second half. Georgia led by as much 30 twice, the first at 58-28 when Coco Miller scored her final basket, lightly tossing the ball in off a pass at 10:33 before going to the bench.

Kentucky whittled the lead down in the final minutes as Georgia coach Andy Landers pulled the rest of his starters. Erica Jackson led Kentucky with 12 points.
